American attorney and politician, 27th U.S. Secretary of Labor (born 1969)
Alexander Acosta was the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida who personally negotiated and approved the controversial 2008 non-prosecution agreement (NPA) with Jeffrey Epstein, a deal later found by the DOJ to reflect 'poor judgment' and which ultimately led to Acosta's resignation as Secretary of Labor in 2019.
Acosta appears extensively in legal documents, government records, and correspondence as the lead federal prosecutor who directly oversaw the Epstein plea negotiations. Documents show him communicating with Epstein's defense attorney Jay Lefkowitz, directing terms of the NPA (including demanding no less than 18 months of incarceration), and later writing a public letter defending the deal. His First Assistant Jeffrey Sloman also features prominently managing communications between the U.S. Attorney's Office and Epstein's legal team. A small number of mentions come from automated newsletter emails reporting on his 2017 Cabinet confirmation and 2019 resignation.
