Who is Kafka in the Epstein files?

In most of the substantive documents it is Terry Kafka, a contact who exchanged emails with Jeffrey Epstein, was listed in his address book, and appears on his daily schedules. Other mentions refer to the author Franz Kafka or use the word "Kafka-esque".

Did Terry Kafka correspond directly with Jeffrey Epstein?

Yes. 11 emails have Kafka in the From/To/Cc header. The ones in the files are mostly short replies from Epstein's jeevacation account dated between December 2014 and June 2016. They are informal in tone and cover topics such as Ken Starr, a friend's surgery, accommodation on East 66th Street, and trips. A 2013 email from Mark Epstein to Terry Kafka asks to get together and is signed "TK".

Why does Kafka appear alongside Leon Black and Marc Rich?

The shared documents with Leon Black are largely forwarded daily schedules where a meeting with Terry Kafka and Phil sits in the same day as a Black lunch. The files do not say that the two men met or worked together. The documents behind the Marc Rich overlap are not detailed in the material reviewed, so no relationship should be inferred from the count alone.

Does being mentioned mean Kafka did anything wrong?

No. The files show contact, meetings and casual emails. They contain no allegation against Terry Kafka in the material reviewed, and many of the 72 mentions are unrelated to him.

Surname reference in Epstein-related documents

"Kafka" in the files is mostly Terry Kafka, an acquaintance who corresponded directly with Jeffrey Epstein by email in 2015–2016 and appears in Epstein's calendar entries and address book. The rest of the 72 documents mention the author Franz Kafka, or the word "Kafka-esque", in newsletters and personal notes.

The clearest material is a run of Epstein emails to Terry Kafka between December 2014 and June 2016. They cover a Ken Starr discussion, a friend's surgery, housing at an apartment on East 66th Street, and casual banter. A 2013 email from Mark Epstein to Terry Kafka asks to get together and ends with "TK". Terry Kafka is also in Epstein's address book, with a contact created in November 2014. He appears in several forwarded daily schedules as an 11:30am meeting "w/Terry Kafka and Phil", and in a May 2019 schedule as a 9:30am appointment. Many other mentions are incidental. These include How To Academy newsletters promoting a Will Self talk on Kafka's The Metamorphosis, a Lawrence Krauss email whose body is the single word "Kafka", and a literary reference to a "Kafka-esque" settlement. The files do not show what Terry Kafka's dealings with Epstein involved.

Key Highlights

•11 emails list Terry Kafka in the From/To/Cc header. The ones in the files are mostly Epstein's short BlackBerry replies from December 2014 to June 2016, on topics like Ken Starr, a friend's surgery, a one-bedroom apartment, and "Philly".
•Terry Kafka is in Epstein's Mac address book, with a contact created on 2014-11-06 and modified on 2018-01-05. He is also on Epstein's schedule: a recurring 11:30am slot "w/Terry Kafka and Phil" appears in many forwarded daily calendars, and a 9:30am appointment on May 21, 2019.
•In those forwarded calendars, the Kafka and Phil meeting sits on the same day as a lunch with Leon Black and appointments with Reid Weingarten, Rich Kahn and Michael Wolff. This likely explains the overlap in shared documents with Black. The calendars do not say what was discussed.
•A March 2014 exchange has Epstein's assistant Lesley Groff asking whether a planned La Jolla meeting was with "Terry Kafka or Terje Rod Larsen". Epstein replies with the single word "Kafka".
•A large share of the 72 documents are not about Terry Kafka at all. They mention the writer Franz Kafka in newsletters, a student-email passage addressed to "Professor Kafka", and personal notes about reading him. The "Kafka-esque" line comes from a House Oversight document discussing a settlement.
•Two other records contain the word in a financial setting, an investment-form record and a financial statement. These look like text-recognition artifacts or boilerplate. Nothing in them ties Terry Kafka to Epstein's finances.
