Who is Michel Hazanavicius in the Epstein files?

He is the French filmmaker who directed "The Artist," which won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director in February 2012. The files show him corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein and Lesley Groff between 2012 and 2014 to arrange meetings in Paris. He also appears in Epstein's travel itineraries and calendar entries.

How did Hazanavicius come to know Epstein according to the documents?

Publicist Peggy Siegal's emails from spring 2012 suggest introducing Epstein to Hazanavicius shortly after his Oscar win. She wrote that he was on his way to see Epstein in Paris. By late March 2012 the two were emailing directly about walks and meetings.

Do the documents show any wrongdoing by Hazanavicius?

No. The emails are brief and mostly about scheduling, such as saying he can or can't attend something or where to meet. Being named in Epstein's files does not by itself imply wrongdoing, and these documents do not allege any.

Did Hazanavicius meet Epstein in person?

The documents suggest he did, or at least planned to. A calendar entry and itinerary list a confirmed 3:00 appointment with Hazanavicius at Epstein's Paris apartment on May 14, 2012. He replied that he would be there, and Epstein's emails mention walks and meetings. The files do not record what was discussed.

1:07

Narrated from the AI-generated summary of the documents. Numbers reflect the archive at generation time.

Michel Hazanavicius, the French director of "The Artist," exchanged dozens of emails with Jeffrey Epstein and his assistant Lesley Groff between 2012 and 2014, mostly to arrange meetings and walks in Paris. Peggy Siegal's emails show she introduced him to Epstein after his Oscar win.

The files include about 28 emails with Hazanavicius in the From, To or Cc line. These are mostly short, friendly scheduling exchanges with Epstein and with Lesley Groff, Epstein's assistant. They are set in spring 2012, with later messages in 2013 and January 2014. Epstein's travel itineraries list him among the people to see in Paris, and a calendar entry shows a confirmed 3:00 appointment with him on May 14, 2012. Other mentions are Peggy Siegal emails, a few Oscar-night society write-ups that name him only as the director of "The Artist," and calendar reminders.

Key Highlights

•Direct emails between Hazanavicius and Epstein from March 2012 to January 2014 cover meeting up, walking and dinner plans. In one, Hazanavicius suggests a meeting spot in Paris (Le Fumoir). In others he says he is in Tbilisi, can't make a Thursday, or will be in Paris until the 15th.
•A May 2012 thread with Lesley Groff reconfirms a meeting with Epstein. Hazanavicius replied "Thank you. I'll be there," and Groff's calendar shows a 3:00 appointment with him at Epstein's Paris apartment on Monday, May 14, 2012.
•Peggy Siegal's emails from March and May 2012 describe him as "the lovely gentle director of 'The Artist'" and suggest introducing him to Epstein. She says he is on his way to see Epstein in Paris, and that she will see him and his wife, Bérénice Bejo, in Cannes.
•Epstein's Paris itineraries for early February 2013 list "Michel Hazanavicius" among the people to see, alongside Jack Lang and Caroline Lang.
•In an April 2012 email titled "Michel The Artist guy," Epstein copies Hazanavicius and Groff, and the two then arrange a meeting.
•The emails are short and social or logistical. Nothing in them shows wrongdoing by Hazanavicius, and the mentions do not suggest anything beyond acquaintance and meetings.
