Epstein Penthouse F 265 East 66th Street New York, NY 10021-6404 Dear Jeff: I want to personally express my appreciation for your recent gift to Interlochen of $1 000 00. Through your support and generosity, Interlochen is better able to achieve its mission in educating young people interested in the arts. We are coming to the close of our academic year with many wonderful memories of 1991-92 at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Our symphony performance at the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities Ball and the performance of the choir and orchestra at Lincoln Center in New York are but a few of the extraordinary events that occurred. These things are made possible because you and others share our values and believe in our direction. I hope that you will join us this summer as we celebrate our 65th anniversary year with a "Gold Medal Summer." It will feature over 400 concerts and performances, many highlighting Interlochen's own stars, the students. On behalf of all of us at Interlochen, thank you again! Interim hen (:enter let the Arts March 4, 1992 Mr. Jeffrey Epstein Chairman of the Board J. Epstein and Associates New York City, NY 10022 Dear Jeff: 0 Interlochen What a wonderful success the Mozart tour was! SRO in Interlochen. SRO in Detroit, with over 1,400 in attendance at St. Hugo's. And, a near sell-out in New York (960 out of 1,004 seats at Alice Tully Hall). By every measure it was a tremendous success, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Interlochen students! We are grateful to you and many others who so generously supported the many aspects of this tour. We raised over $125,000; and, as I indicated, the money was well invested. Parents, friends, donors, and students all agree on the valuable experience this opportunity provided. I am sorry you were out of town; you missed a wonderful concert. However, your presence was felt in the underwriting of the pre-concert reception. Several foundations and corporations were represented including: AT&T, Textron, Mott Foundation, as well as numerous major donors. The Radisson Empire did an outstanding job for us. And, your contribution helped Interlochen network with several new potential donors. I have enclosed a copy of the bill totalling $5,530.78. Your original agreement was to cover 40 people. As the event drew closer, we invited those individuals that we felt would be appropriate, with the expectation that 50% would show up on a Thursday. As you can see by the invoice, eighty people attended and were treated to a wonderful buffet and dessert. The total of your commitment was for $2,765. If you had a good month and would like to do a little more, that would be fine also. I have enclosed a few of the collateral pieces we used for the New York tour. You will be receiving, under separate cover, a tape recording of the concert as produced for WIAA radio in mid- to late-March. Interlochen Center for the Arts 0 Interlochen February 9, 1994 Mr. Jeffrey Epstein J. Epstein and Company, Inc. New York, NY 10022 Dear Jeffrey: I have talked to you and Ghislaine on several occasions to say thank you. But, I wanted to express in writing my personal and professional gratitude for the very generous gift $20 0 for a new scholarship lodge. It is truly an extraordinary sture. I thought an update would be appropriate at this time. 1. The contract with Town and Country has been executed and they have scheduled construction of the lodge. 2. We are waiting for the temperature to rise above 10-15 degrees so that we can move the existing buildings and set the foundation. (The June target date remains at this time.) Design and construction of the exterior walls is underway. 3. You have approved the latest set of drawings with the basement entrance as indicated and approved the green roof which works for us as well. 4. We are requesting furniture packages from local vendors that will be both aesthetic and functional for a rental lodge. When we receive the packages and corresponding quotes, we will send them on to Ghislaine for her comments and suggestions. 5. We anticipate setting aside all lodge income in the 1994 Camp season and placing the net income in an endowment fund so that subsequent repairs, maintenance and furniture replacement are funded through the endowment. Under the charitable contribution act, you are permitted use of the lodge for two weeks each year, without any negative implications in respect to the full tax deductibility of your gift. Naturally, we would like you to visit the new lodge this summer. So that we might begin to book the lodge, I would ask you to consider what two weeks you would like reserved for your use. Perlman will be giving his concert on August 7, 1994. I have enclosed the appropriate tax code for your file. We have much to discuss as we move towards completion, but I thought this might be helpful. Jeffrey, we really appreciate all that you do for Interlochen. Please accept my personal thanks for your gift of $20,000 designated for the Olympic Project. While we are still struggling through snow and cold days, summer is never far from our minds. This year, we have added 2 new programs: we will now offer a creative writing program and a chamber music program. However, our big news is that the World Youth Symphony Orchestra will be going to Atlanta to perform in the opening weekend of the Olympics. Again, Ed Downing has been working his magic to present another record-setting Summer Festival Concert Series. I hope you will be able to visit our campus and attend these events. Thank you again for including Interlochen in your annual philanthropy. Your gift will go directly toward helping talented and deserving students through our scholarship program. The generosity of you and fellow donors enables us to offer artistic and academic opportunities to students from all nations, backgrounds, and cultural heritage. The final camper concert, "Les Preludes," marks the conclusion of our 69th summer camp season. During the summer, over 1,800 campers participated in 4 and 8-week sessions with scholarship support totaling more than $800,000. Over 500 events during the 1996 Summer Arts Festival brought thousands of visitors to the campus. Just a few of the outstanding student performances during August include the high-schoolers' presentation of the operetta "Princess Ida" and the intermediate students' presentation of "Romeo and Juliet." During the second weekend of August, concerto winners are recognized for their achievements by performing solos with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. As you may have heard, WYSO was an outstanding representation for Interlochen at the Olympics through their highly-praised performance in Atlanta's Symphony Hall on July 21. It's difficult to express how pleased I was to fmd a check for $50,000 in the Federal Express envelope from The Foundation. Per your instructions, $45,000 will be used for operations and scholarship support-- $5,000 will be held in a reserve account for a South Africa Scholarship Fund ($3,990 will be used for Camp tuition and $1,010 for travel expense. With your permission, I will also designate $5,000 for the Presidential Discretionary Fund (from the $45,000 operations monies), which will be used by the President for emergency needs or to fund a project vital to Interlochen but not anticipated in the regular budget process. It's difficult to get a sense of this place and see the accomplishments of the students in a short time; but, I am pleased that you have made some time in your busy schedule. Interlochen's 70th Camp season concluded with "Les Preludes" in the Interlochen Bowl on August 17. A $500,000 grant presented earlier that week by Michigan Governor John Engler will be used to upgrade performance venues, including renovations to the historic Bowl. Other construction projects include continuing work on the new Piano Building and Theater and beginning improvements on the first of the residence halls slated for renovation. After breaking the $2 million mark for summer concert ticket sales, the fall season of the Interlochen Arts Festival begins with Grammy-award-winner pianist George Winston. Also appearing in September is organist Diane Bish, who will be performing in Dendrinos Chapel. With the opening of the 36th year of the high school Academy on September 13, presentations by student, faculty, and guest instructors will begin within a few weeks. The ability to move forward on campus improvements, new programs, and the commitment to arts education is possible because of your generosity. Thank you again for your gift to Interlochen. The excellence of our Academy students was evident with the recent selection of 5 seniors by ARTS, a national program that recognizes achievements in academics and arts. Award candidates participate in a week of workshops and interaction with 124 peers and panels of distinguished artists. Based on the adjudications, first level winners are nominated as Presidential Scholars and honored in Washington. Since 1980, Interlochen has had 29 Presidential Scholars--more than any other high school in the United States. February activities include Winterlochen with parents and friends visiting for a Teacher Appreciation Reception, outdoor games, and orchestra performance with concerto winners. Student presentations include the theater division's production of "Into the Woods," brass and percussion ensemble performance, Black History Month celebration, and the Winter Dance Concert. The progress of construction and renovation projects is visible with the closing in of the music building and exterior work on the newly-remodeled residence hall. Because of this winter's mild weather, we're hopeful that the new theater and music building will be ready by the time camp opens. The generosity of our many friends makes new buildings and renovations a reality as well as the $4 million in financial aid we provide annually. Thanks again for your gift to Interlochen. I n t er l ee chen Cen t er for t he Ar t s 2/20/98 41 Interlochen World Etitic to Am Elmriu Mr. Jeffrey Epstein E stein Foundation New York, NY 10022 Dear Jeffrey: Thank you for your contribution of $1,500 received 2/19/98 for Interlochen's Restricted Fund. Our goal is to produce quality and excellence in arts education. However, long-term success depends on those of you who provide financial assistance for us to carry out this mission. The seed of "a little camp in the woods," planted by Dr. Joseph E. Maddy in 1927 has grown throughout the years. Historical decades in a time capsule of the Camp's growth follows: The 20's--The National High School Orchestra Association Camp is established and considered a success and an artistic haven for young musicians. The 30's-CBS and NBC networks broadcast concerts to thousands of listeners spreading the word of Joseph Maddy's treasure in the woods. The 40's—Growth increases as a Dance Department is added, Fine Arts Building is dedicated. Kresge is completed, and Junior and Intermediate Divisions are established. The Camp became affiliated with the University of Michigan, By-laws were revised, and The National High School Orchestra Association officially became the National Music Camp The S0's—Constniction included a new radio building, the Joseph E. Maddy Administration Building, Lochaven and Pinecrest (dining areas), all-in-all 104 buildings to-date. The Chamber Music Festival became part of the post-Camp offerings. The 60's—Like a flower blooming, the physical campus continued its steady growth with the addition of scholarship lodges and WIAA Public Radio. The Academy was established and classrooms were built to provide a proper educational environment. The 70's—Construction virtually came to a halt. Growth came through performances, as 139 concerts, programs and exhibitions were presented off-campus in 73 Michigan cities through the first Interlochen Outreach" program. The National Music Camp celebrated its 50th season in 1977. The 80's--Presentations continued to grow in number and stature. Both on- and off-campus, international guest artists and ensembles performed. Academic excellence continued as the Academy celebrated its 25th year and the Camp, its 60th. The 90's--Repair and renovation of existing buildings and construction of a Music Building Complex is underway. Began in 1995. The Campaign for Interlochen included four elements: construction, renovation. scholarships and endowment, a plan designed to ensure the future of young artists attending Interlochen. From the beginning a can-do spirit prevailed, allowing Interlochen Center for the Arts to grow into one of America's true cultural treasures. One that touches the lives of thousands of young people who assume worldwide leadership positions in the arts, education, business, and industry. Per my conversation with we have designated $25,000 from your account here at Interlochen to be used to pay tuition and expenses for I senior year. Should you or her family receive any additional notices for payment from either our business office or admissions office, please disregard them. Additionally, Mr. Epstein, we have recently gone through changes in policy on how and what we can record as a contribution. This policy revision has been debated at various levels over the past four years and was only recently approved at our February Board of Trustees Meeting. As a 501(c)3 organization, Interlochen must be vigilant in being proper stewards of all contributions. In the past, it was part of our giving policy to accept as gifts, money given to fund a specific student as named by the donor. Your support has fallen within this category on various occasions and made it possible for deserving students to attend Interlochen while gaining a tax deduction for your contribution. This is a gesture that we look upon as very generous on your part. Please be advised for future reference that Interlochen has discontinued the practice of accepting gifts that are restricted to a donor designated student. Funding from your account for has been grandfathered in. It is only proper that we honor your original intentions as isamMith Tim Ambrose. It was our intention to discuss this change with you in person while President Downing and I were in New York in April. Unfortunately, our schedules did not allow for a meeting. If you have any questions please can call me direct at or I will be happy to discuss this with Thank you for your loyal support and I hope we can find new ways for your philanthropy to assist many students who wish to attend Interlochen. The curriculum is accelerated with special emphasis on character development and initiative. Founded in 1927 by Dr. Joseph E. Maddy, Interlochen was incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization in 1977. The corporation includes Interlochen Arts Academy, Interlochen Arts Camp and WIAA-FM/WIZY-FM public radio service. INTERLOCHEN ARTS ACADEMY celebrates 30 years of excellence in arts and academics. Founded in 1962 as a winter program to complement the established arts camp, the academy enrolls 420 students in grades 9 through 12 and a postgraduate year. It features instruction in music, theater, dance, visual arts and creative writing with college preparatory academics. Ninety-seven percent of academy graduates attend a school of higher education — most often the school of their first choice. Interlochen has had more Presidential Scholars in the Arts than any other high school in the country. INTERLOCHEN ARTS CAMP celebrates 65 years in 1992. The camp is an eight-week program and enrolls 3500 students from all 50 states and more than 30 countries. It embraces students ages 8 through high school in three divisions. Concentrated and highly competitive programs in music, theater, dance and visual arts are offered. More than 256 courses are available each summer. The camp and the University of Michigan enjoy a 50-year affiliation. WIAA-FM serves a regional audience of nearly 300,000 listeners at 88.7 FM, Interlochen, and 100.9 FM, East Jordan. The station, a charter member of National Public Radio, is an integral part of public broadcasting in Michigan. The students of the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and Choir are among the renowned musicians invited to perform at Lincoln Center, the only high school in the United States to be so honored. They join thousands of world-class artists, technicians, sponsors and organizers who make this event possible. Among presenters are the New York Philharmonic, The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, The Juilliard School, the New York City Opera, and orchestras from Salzburg, Vienna, Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco. To be invited to participate in the Mozart Bicentennial is a proud moment for Interlochen. It reflects the commitment to quality education which is at the center of Interlochen's mission. Conceived by Neal Zaslaw, musicological advisor to the Bicentennial, the Masses-in- Concert programs are a series of novel musical presentations halfway between concerts and historical reconstructions of concerted Masses as performed in the 1770s. Each concert will present Mozart's liturgical music, including a Mass with related choral music, church sonatas and symphony move- ments as they might have been heard at a high Mass at Salzburg Cathedral and other central European churches in Mozart's day. The Mozart Bicentennial at Lincoln Center opened January 27, 1991, and lasts through August 1992, during which the 11 companies resident at Lincoln Center and invited organizations pay tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by perform- ing his complete works and presenting related ballets, films, exhibits, lectures, 0 1/4 symposia and theater works. Epstein 9416 Penthouse F 265 East 66th Street New York, NY 10021-6404 Dear Mr. Epstein: It is with great appreciation for your continued generosity to Interlochen that I write to you today and offer membership into Interlochen's most treasured donor club. Your ongoing support of the Center prompts me to bring to your attention this very special assemblage -- The President's Club of Interlochen. A bit of background... Established in 1974, The President's Club consists of Interlochen's key individual supporters -- those who believe in the ideals upon which Interlochen was founded and have chosen to support in many ways the activities of our Center. Interlochen's President's Club is a vital component of our ongoing success. 1HE SIDENE IN FE IMERtOCHENCENIER PORNE ARTS INIERLOCHEN. MICHIGAN 49643 In addition to making financial commitments, President's Club members assist Interlochen by attending concerts, events and special meetings, identifying prospective students and providing counsel to the president on issues and policies of the institution. They share in many ways the aspirations and accomplishments of Interlochen and its students and faculty. Incidentally, the past three fiscal years have provided the most dramatic increase in President's Club membership since the inception of the Club. It would be an honor to add the Epstein name to the roster which presently boasts many of the country's leading patrons of the arts. Your much appreciated past gifts to the Center would qualify you as a member Paid In Full. All that is needed is your signature on the enclosed card and the rest is up to me. Please feel free to call or write if I can answer any questions. I'll look forward to receiving your signed Statement of Acceptance for Membership. Again, thank you so much for remaining such an important part of the Interlochen family... CONFIDENTIAL INT 000250 EFTA00102951

It is with a great deal of excitement and anticipation that I write to inform you of my intent to leave the Interlochen Center for the Arts effective July 12, 1996. I have been offered the position of Executive Director of Develop he School of Business at Indiana University and, after much deliberation with, the kids, and the cat, have accepted the offer. The program at Indiana is first-rate and I look forward to my new responsibilities with a recipe of eagerness, excitement and just a pinch or two of appropriate fear! My association with Interlochen goes back to 1972 when I first set foot on the grounds as a terribly shy summer camper from Mississippi forced to attend by a painfully persuasive mother. Now, as my family and I prepare to leave, it becomes even more apparent what Interlochen has meant and means to me — Mom was right all along. High atop the list of gifts Interlochen has given me are the friendships I have made with alumni, parents, friends, trustees and, of course, my co-workers here on campus. Now that I come to think of it, I can honestly blame the amount of gray hair on my head from the same group! As a friend of mine said not too long ago, "may our paths cross often and with fond remembrances of the time we shared at Interlochen"! joins me in sending our heartfelt best wishes to you for health, happiness and peace... 0 Business Day 4.1)c ;Mu ilork e"5int es Boeing Has Its Feet on the Ground Aircraft Giant Branches Out but Stays Close to Its Roots By ADAM BRYANT In the aerospace business. Boeing seems Invincible. By placing big bets on new aircraft and paying close attention to re- search and engineering, it has grown to dominate its Industry by a wide margin. When it has tried to diversify outside the notoriously volatile aircraft industry. though, it has a remarkable history of missing the mark. Through the years, the Boeing Company has made everything from windmills and hydrofoils to rail cars and computer-con- trolled buses. In its early days, it even tried making furniture. And while most of these ventures were considered technical suc- cesses, they all drained cash until the com- pany shut them down. Now, undeterred, Boeing is breaking out into new areas again. But there is a differ- ence this time: The company finally ap- pears to have learned from its mistakes. In recent months, the Seattle-based Boeing has announced a number of new ventures — such as selling corporate Jets and train- ing pilots — that suggest that it has decided to stay close to its aerospace roots. "Boeing has learned that if it reaches too far afield, it gets burned." said Wolfgang H. Demisch, an aerospace analyst at BT 'Securities. "So it is trying to somehow extend its presence by building on its exist- ing franchises." More is at stake than simply erasing Boeing's dubious record in sideline busi- nesses. For one, the new ventures, if suc- cessful, can help smooth out the cyclical swings that have long buffeted Boeing's stock price and the size of its work force. That search for balance was a big reason Boeing announced last December its inten- tion to acquire the McDonnell Douglas Cor- poration, whose strength in military con- tracting should complement Boeing's com- mercial aircraft business. But that deal. Continued on Page 19 Maintaining Altitude Over the years. Ground A Commercial tion of in-flight video and audio sys- tems. Boeing officials declined to predict how much revenue Boeing Enter- prises may generate in coming years. But Nicholas Heymann, an aerospace analyst at Prudential Se- curities, has estimated that Boeing Enterprises could take in $5 billion by 2000, with operating profit mar- gins of about 20 to 25 percent. He also predicted that the division would grow 8 to 10 percent a year. Boeing officials said two overarch- ing criteria would guide Boeing En- terprises expansion into new areas: It must know at least something about the products and their custom- ers. As sensible as that strategy sounds, Boeing is nevertheless add- ing to the challenges it faces in com- ing years, particularly in trying to absorb McDonnell Douglas into its corporate culture. "The jury is still out on whether they are overreaching themselves in other business," Mr. Demisch said. "What they are attempting is pretty ambitious." For all the challenges of the corpo- rate strategy, though, one thing is clear: Boeing will leave behind few- er curiosities for historians. When the aircraft industry slumped in 1918 after the end of World War 1, for example. Boeing tried to augment its modest plane-building business by making flat-bottomed boats called sea sleds and furniture like dressers and phonograph cases. Boeing hadhoped to sell the boats to the Navy, but they eventually wound up in the hands of private owners who bought them at a dis- count. And Boeing's own employees bought much of the furniture at clearance prices. According to "Leg- end and Legacy," a history of Boeing by Robert J. Serling, the company sent out a notice to employees that included this sales pitch: " P.S. If you have delayed getting married on ac- count of the high price of furniture, now is the time to get a good start." The next big push to diversify came alter World War II, when Boeing's production lines for bomb- ers were almost shut down. It consid- ered getting into the car and house- hold appliance businesses, but Boeing executives determined that that would be too much of a stretch even for them. The company tried the turbine engine business instead. In the late 1960's. when business was so slow that Boeing at one point went 18 months without getting a single aircraft order, the company branched into a wide variety of busi- nesses. It built passenger and mili- tary hydrofoils, wind-powered tur- bines, public transit equipment, even police rad one point, BoeiMnnttil-sell- ing potatoes as part of an Irrigation Success Most of Boeing's revenues Come from the sale of commercial airplanes. - although the pending acquisition of McDonnell Douglas will make the military and aerospace sector a bigger contributor to its bottom line. , 1996 nEvENuES $22.7 blglon ; MILITARY ARO AEROSPACE Other 6.8%1 rBattle systems s: (like AWAC's) 6.4% $pace 7 systems i COMMERCIAL AIRPLANES Sant Camo4my 'Goons TM New yont., experiment. 6. But as demand picked up 161: planes, particularly with airline-dt regulation in 1978, Boeing eventual' left all these businesses to focug- the products and customers it best. In the process, it became a f g narrower company, although a.1t. more prosperous one than if it- b continued pouring money into extraii • neous ventures. . . . -‘. Since then. Boeing has goed through a fundamental change, and has come to see itself as an aero- space company, rather than a com- pany with engineering prowess that can be applied to just about anything. One former Boeing executive who was involved in many past diversifi- cation efforts, John H. Goldie, summed up Boeing's mistakes in "Legend and Legacy," although his words serve as a warning to all com- panies: "Boeing never had a strategy to diversify in any intelligent way," Mr. Goldie said. "It gets into these things on an ad hoc basis. Somebody Ind- motes an idea and if he's reasonably capable, it'll work. But if the guy's an idiot and doesn't do anylfIcale0 1 search, it'll be a disaster." EFTA00102962
Boeing Has Its Feet on-tli Continued From First Business Page scheduled to be completed early next month, has encountered sharp criti- cism* from the European • Union. which has threatened to oppose the merger tomorrow in its final ruling unless Boeing accepts severe restric- tions on its operations. The Clinton Administration has signaled that it may retaliate if the European Union decides to impose stiff fines on Boeing. For all its problems with Euro- pean regulators, Boeing has another kind of problem — the kind any com- pany would love to have. It expects to generate such hefty profits in com- ing years that it will be forced to find new uses for all the cash. Yesterday. it reported second-quarter net' in- come of $336 million on revenues' Of $9.29 billion. The results were short of analysts' expectations, and the stock fell $1.6875, closing at 954.975. But that Is probably Just a blip on the radar. And this time, Boeing Is not waiting to start searching for new businesses only after aircraft orders have slumped and it is struggling to keep its workers busy. "That is a significant difference between the past and where we are today." said Lawrence W. Clarkson, president of Boeing Enterprises, a division created In January to seek out and manage new ventures. - Boeing, for example, Is now In- the corporate jet business. The idea grew out of conversations between Philip M. Condit, Boeing's chairman. and John F. Welch, chairman of the General Electric Company, a big supplier of engines to Boeing as well as a big buyer of jets for its aircraft leasing division. According to Boeing executives, Mr. Welch had already committed to buying two 737's for corporate use, but mentioned to Mr. Condit that they still lacked the range of tradi- tional, smaller corporate jets. Boeing then set 100 engineers to work designing a 737 with the most modern wings and bigger fuel tanks to get its range above 6,000 miles. Offered this new capability. Mr. Welch immediately switched his or- der to the new version and, con- vinced such a plane would appeal to other executives, joined Boeing as a partner to start Boeing Business Jets. The planes, at about $38 million to $40 million each, are approximate- ly the same price as the smaller, top- of-the-line corporate jets made by Gulfstream and Bombardier. At a news conference last year to announce the venture, Boeing offi- cials had planned to say they expect- ed to sell six to eight business Jets a . tti Booing Co. (BA,N) • sr .! My only comments are as follows. I believe the porch on the waterside should go all the way front one side of the house to the other; accessible by sliding doors from both bedrooms at either side of the house (so you can walk from the bedroom directly out to an outdoor porch). I also believe the hall on the right bedroom wall should be switched around so you can go front the bedroom to the bathroom without walking past the doorway that leads to the outside (maybe have the hall on the "flip-side"). As drawn, the bathroom can only be accessed from the bedrooms on the right going through the hallway which has the door open to the outside. Instead of the covered porch on the from of the house (being as large as it is); I'd rather see the same space used for two balconies outside the bedrooms on the lower side (or at lease the balcony off the bedroom on the right). If these plans can be made quickly. I'm ready to fund. Sincerely, Jeffrey Epstein CONFIDENTIAL INT 000268 EFTA00102969

She will forward the plans to me upon completion. The basic plan for one-half of the lodge is priced in the neighborhood of $125,000 to $150,000, depending on the options selected. DATE: April 19, 1994 TO: Jeffrey Epstein FROM: Timothy J. Ambrose SUBJECT: Bathroom Placement Enclosed are two attachments. Attachment A is the current configuration and Attachment B is a proposed configuration for placement of the guest bathroom. There was some discussion previously with respect to the guests walking in front of an exterior door to get to the bathroom. Obviously Attachment B has the same problem. The upside, however, is that you can pass from the outside door into the greatroom without entering a guest bedroom. This is particularly important when guests have mud or sand on shoes or boots. I would encourage your consideration in changing the current configuration to Attachment B, if you have no serious objections. CONFIDENTIAL INT 000275 EFTA00102976

DATE: August 23, 1994 TO: Dan Bauer FROM: Timothy J. Ambrose SUBJECT: Epstein Lodge I find no precedent for billing back the use of a scholarship lodge to Advancement. While I was fortunate to raise the dollars to build the lodge, I don't believe there is an obligation to pay for his use. I believe the income that is generated counts towards the general lodge income. I would suggest that it is part of the cost of doing business and a small way of recognizing the tremendous benefit it will have on your bottom line. JEFFREY EPSTEIN SCHOLARSHIP LODGE A new scholarship lodge, now under construction, is being donated through the generosity of a New York Investment Counselor and former camper, Jeffery Epstein. This 1,500 square foot, three- bedroom, cedar log cabin is located on the northwest side of campus on Green Lake. The lodge is designed to be barrier free and features special amenities, including a stone fireplace and a Silcraft whirlpool tub for wheelchair restricted guests. Income from the rental of this lodge is estimated at approximately $15,000 annually and will be used to fund scholarships. An investment such as this provides benefits to both Interlochen and the donor: A. Interlochen has the benefit of a very special on-campus facility for parents, guests and visiting artists. Furthermore the annual income generated from the rental will support several partial scholarships to both Camp and Academy. B. The donor receives benefit in the knowledge that this initial contribution will continue to provide scholarship monies this year and for decades, and that countless talented and financially deserving students will be able to share in the "Interlochen experience" well into the next century. Additionally the donor has, at their option, complimentary use of the lodge for 14 days, without a negative tax implications with respect to the deducibility of the entire gift. If you would like information on how your gift to Interlochen can be of mutual benefit, lease contact Timothy Ambrose in the Advancement Office CONFIDENTIAL INT 000279 EFTA00102980

As you can see, there is a diversity of programs and each one is quite fine. You may want to consider being with us on a weekend when the orchestra is playing a concert. In many respects, the orchestra represents the overall high level of achievement characteristic of the Academy, and I know you would find their performance quite impressive. If you have a chance to come to Interlochen early in the fall, we may be able to situate you in one of the cabins I mentioned before. However, once the weather turns colder later on, you would probably find one of the rooms in the hotel on campus more comfortable. We'll be delighted to have you visit us, Jeff. NY 10022 Dear Jeffrey: I regret that Rich and I were unable to make connections on our last visit to New York. Your administrative assistant did call on Friday and, unfortunately, I did not take my voice mail until Monday. Sometimes our success or failure is tied to timing. Apparently it wasn't the right timing. In any event, I want to express our appreciation for your past generosity and ask your consideration in supporting the students once again. Just before the Christmas holidays we were invited to perform on Sunday of the opening weekend of the Olympics. We are the only youth group, outside of the Atlanta Junior Symphony and Australia Junior Symphony (2000 Olympics), to participate. Clearly our profile is very high, as we will be performing the only commissioned piece for the Olympics in conjunction with Andrew Young, Co-Chair of the Atlanta Olympics. We will be spending three days in Atlanta with the World Youth Orchestra in conjunction with this performance at Symphony Hall. It's a wonderful opportunity for us to be invited and to perform at the 100th anniversary of the modern games. The cost is just over $250,000 to transport. house, feed, and entertain 136 members of WYSO, along with appropriate chaperons and technical support staff. Additionally, we plan on purchasing used tuxedos for the performance in Atlanta at a cost of $20,000. We believe it is important for the students to represent Interlochen as the World Center for Arts Education and tuxedos are the choice of the students in electing their performance wear. Last year you generously provided a gift of $25,000 which we used for annual scholarships. In t e r l e• chen Cen t e r f or t he Ar t s July 24, 1998 Interlochen *DA EilCIIIII Mr. Jeffrey E. Epstein New York, NY 10022-6809 Dear Jeffrey, A few months ago, , you, and I met to discuss your consideration of a multi-year capital campaign pledge that would be in addition to your present, generous annual support. You suggested that a proposal in the range of $1.5-2 million, preferably payable over 5 years, would receive your serious consideration. You are probably wondering why it has taken so long to produce this formal request. I have 2 simple, selfish reasons. First, I wanted to have your gift put the campaign over our announced goal of $45 million, and second, what I have outlined below has required considerable research and discussion with faculty, staff, some Board members, and the artistic community at large. I would like you to consider a $2 million gift to endow the first Interlochen or Epstein Young Artists Scholarship Award. Once these funds are received, Interlochen will, according to its investment policy, have available, on an annual basis, the 5% average of the 3 previous years' earnings to spend. This should approximate $100,000 per year. I would propose that the funds generated be used as follows: Interlochen would annually, in January, conduct a nationwide competition for the best matriculating high school sophomore artist. The winner of this competition would receive a 2-year scholarship (based on satisfactory annual achievement artistically, academically, and socially) to attend Interlochen Arts Academy (present value S50,000). A portion of the annual earnings (up to $5,000) could be reserved to cover the student's travel to and from campus twice per year or would provide an annual allowance for artistic enrichment, such as attending master classes, workshops, or private lessons with noted artists. Upon graduation from Interlochen, the recipient would also receive a $10,000 cash prize, which must be applied toward college or a conservatory within 1 year. We might also try to arrange, based on the artistic discipline, a 1-year recording contract, exhibit in a gallery, an agent, publishing contract, etc. fnteriathen Arts Academy • Inter:,..'hen Arts Camp Intrrfachen Ft.nizt Radio FM/ 10419 FM Inze.• • then Center hr the Arts • -• In ferinchen. Page 2 July 24, 1998 By the end of the second year, we will have a junior and senior in place; so the total annual cost will be about $65,000 per year. The balance of the annual expendable percentage earned will be used to supplement our present marketing efforts. I have shared this concept with a few corporate and foundation executives and have told them you are first in line to consider the actual proposal. Once I have your response (and hopefully support), I will work to secure another 9 such commitments; so we eventually can offer them annually in many artistic areas. This would grow our scholarship endowment by $20 million and through our increased marketing resource provide considerable national visibility for each donor. There is nothing like this being done at the high school level in this country. I believe this proposal answers the question you asked me during our first meeting in your study over 2 years ago. April 22, 2002 Mr. Jeffrey E. Epstein New York, New York 10022-6809 Dear Jeffrey: Over the past 9 years as a member of the Board of Trustees at Interlochen Center for the Arts, I have had the pleasure of quietly watching your philanthropy do good work at both the camp and academy. It seems that you have touched many different areas of campus life via your generosity. You have improved the housing facilities at Interlochen with your funding of the Epstein Lodge. Your philanthropy has certainly been directly helpful to a number of camp and academy students through our scholarship and financial aid programs. And, I'll never forget the spectacular events you made possible for a number of New York City alumni gatherings. I would like you to know that your generosity has not gone unnoticed by those of us who serve Interlochen through the Board of Trustees. Please accept my personal thanks for your significant history of philanthropy. The end of Interlochen's fiscal year is closing in very quickly. The year has been a challenging one in the area of annual fund raising to say the least. It appears that this year's very aggressive goal of $3.4 million could be missed by as much as $400,000. For that reason, the development office, members of the Board of Trustees and President Downing are contacting every alum, parent, friend and past supporter to request their participation in the annual fund this year. Jeffrey, you have given as much as $50,000 in one year to student aid. I am not asking you to equal that very significant gift, but I would like to ask you to consider making a gift of $25,000 to our annual effort by May 31, 2002. March 25, 2003 Mr. Jeffrey Epstein New York, NY 1 21-4118 161 I N TE R LOC H EN Cc) Itcr /Hr Hi(' /iris Dear Jeffrey: It was terrific to have you join us for the 75th Anniversary event at Avery Fisher Hall. A proud moment for everyone associated with Interlochen Center for the Arts. A few weeks after our return to Michigan, we learned that the Academy Jazz Ensemble was selected to participate in the Essentially Ellington competition hosted by the Jazz at Lincoln Center (J@LC) Program. We were thrilled to be one of the 15 finalists out of an applicant pool of 300 entries! In the two-pan competition a panel of judges (including composer, conductor, and Ellington authority David Berger, bassist and composer Rufus Reid; saxophonist, bandleader, and educator Loren Schoenberg, and JOLC Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis) will judge each band's performance of three Ellington works. At the 7:30pm concert on May 19, the top three bands will perform alone and with Mr. Marsalis as soloist, followed by the LCJO performing an all-Ellington set. Due to the nature and timing of the selection process for this prestigious competition, Interlochen was unable to plan ahead and include participation costs into our operational budget. Therefore, we have decided to approach a few select individuals to ask for assistance in underwriting $17,000 needed to cover all of the expenses, which include airfare, lodging and per diem for 17 students and 6 adults. Jeffrey, would you consider supporting this endeavor? The competition is slated for May 17-20th in New York City at The Juilliard School. We are scheduled to arrive in New York City on Saturday evening and depart on Tuesday morning. It's an exciting opportunity and a wonderful educational achievement for our jazz program which we couldn't pass up! It points once again to the high caliber of Interlochen students and faculty of which we are so proud. Thank you in advance for giving this your serious consideration. If you should have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, h Ston Vi t, Development EFTA00102994
