Watch: Francis Jardine-Deuss in the Epstein files
1:04Narrated from the AI-generated summary of the documents. Numbers reflect the archive at generation time.
Francis Jardine-Deuss is a private individual who corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein by email from about 2009 to 2017. The messages show a friendly, long-running personal relationship, and in 2013 Epstein described what he wanted in an assistant.
All 85 documents that mention Jardine-Deuss are emails, and 11 of them have Jardine-Deuss in the From/To/Cc header. The messages are casual and personal, covering catch-ups, Skype calls, travel and life updates. In June 2013 Jardine-Deuss asked Epstein about a job, and Epstein replied with a rough description of the role. In July 2013 Jardine-Deuss sent group emails to Epstein and several others, including John Demartini, Jan Deuss and John Gunderson. The files contain no flight logs, legal filings, financial records or other non-email records for this person.
Key Highlights
- •The correspondence runs from August 2009 to January 2017. Jardine-Deuss often writes warmly and informally, sometimes from a BlackBerry or iPhone. Epstein's replies are short, such as "call again", "great" and "let me know closer to the dates".
- •In June 2013, Jardine-Deuss wrote "Dear Jeffrey! I hope all is well in your world. It has been such a long time since we have connected". Epstein answered that he "only wish[ed] you and I had stayed together, as we used to enjoy so many of the same things" and asked for a phone number. The files do not say what the original relationship was.
- •After a phone call on 9 June 2013, Jardine-Deuss asked in an email titled "Job description?" what the assistant role would involve. Epstein's reply, partly legible, asked for someone in their 20s who can travel, organize his travel and business schedule, and be "poised and presentable". The files do not show whether Jardine-Deuss was hired or was asking on someone else's behalf.
- •In July 2013, Jardine-Deuss sent several emails to a group that included Epstein, John Demartini, Jan Deuss, John Gunderson (at a Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital address) and Michelle Edwards. One, titled "Private? Stress", describes "very strange symptoms in my body and in my thoughts". Another objects to being addressed in a way that felt like being treated like a child. The context for these messages is not fully visible in the files.
- •A July 2013 email says a photo of Jardine-Deuss and Epstein from the past had arrived. Epstein replied, "you are great, i sent the picture to help remind you of that fact".
- •Other threads are social. These include a March 2010 Skype scramble, a July 2010 detox retreat in Italy, a September 2011 note from Mykonos, and Epstein's reply to the Italy email, "i will be in paris, want to come visit?". In July 2015 Jardine-Deuss proposed New York dates in October, and Epstein answered "let me know closer to the dates". The files do not show whether a visit happened.
