Watch: William Spear in the Epstein files
1:04Narrated from the AI-generated summary of the documents. Numbers reflect the archive at generation time.
William Spear is the founder and president of the Fortunate Blessings Foundation and of Second Response, a charity. The files show him writing to Jeffrey Epstein from 2013 to 2017, mostly through Epstein's assistant Lesley Groff, to ask for a meeting, a call or funding.
Spear appears in 83 documents, 82 of them emails, and in 65 he is in the From/To/Cc header. Most of these are fundraising and relationship-building messages to Epstein, which Lesley Groff forwarded or answered. They include a November 2013 "Letter of Intent from Fortunate Blessings," follow-ups in 2014, a December 2015 "Summary Material" deck, and an April 2017 note about Second Response. A smaller group are foundation newsletters and appeals sent to Epstein's address, including a November 2017 "URGENT APPEAL" and a PLAYshops report from Sri Lanka. The files include no flight logs, legal filings or financial records involving him.
Key Highlights
- •On November 12, 2013, Spear emailed Epstein a "Letter of Intent from Fortunate Blessings," with a proposed research methodology attached. Groff forwarded it and wrote that he wanted to speak with Epstein or his foundation head and had spoken with Boris Nikolic.
- •In a November 15, 2013 email to Boris Nikolic, Spear said he had written to Epstein. Nikolic's forwarded reply says he has not had much time and asks "Is he worth meeting?" This suggests Spear was approaching Epstein through intermediaries.
- •From 2014 to 2017 Spear sent repeated updates to Epstein: an annual report (April 2014), a request for a call or meeting while in New York (April and June 2014), and a note about a May 2014 introduction. He also sent a December 2015 summary deck for Second Response. Groff usually replied that she would pass the message to Jeffrey.
- •In December 2015, Ann Marie Miles, who described herself as Spear's Development Director for Second Response, emailed Epstein a correction to the deck, with Spear copied.
- •Spear's emails to Epstein describe humanitarian work, including Fortunate Blessings, Second Response (disaster response and research) and PLAYshops with children. The files do not show whether Epstein gave money or met Spear. The emails are mostly one-sided requests.
- •Nothing in these emails alleges wrongdoing by Spear. The relationship is solicitation of a wealthy donor, handled mostly by Groff, and the files show no reply from Epstein himself.
