Harvard evolutionary psychologist, received Epstein research funding
Watch: Marc Hauser in the Epstein files
1:04Narrated from the AI-generated summary of the documents. Numbers reflect the archive at generation time.
Marc Hauser, the Harvard psychologist and evolutionary biologist, corresponded directly with Jeffrey Epstein from at least 2009 to 2015, mostly pitching research and education-technology ideas that he hoped Epstein would fund. The files also show Epstein's circle discussing Hauser's 2010 Harvard misconduct troubles and a Morality Conference withdrawal.
Of the 82 documents that mention Hauser, 75 are emails, and 33 have him in the From/To/Cc header. These include his own messages to Epstein, Epstein's replies, and scheduling emails with Epstein's assistant Lesley Groff. The remaining mentions are four non-email records: a travel itinerary, and financial and investment records that list "Dr. Marc Hauser" as a numbered item in a file index alongside consulting agreements for Marvin Minsky and others. He also appears in contact lists Epstein circulated in 2014. Many email hits are repeats of the same threads, with his Harvard signature block (33 Kirkland St) copied into forwards and replies.
Key Highlights
- •In a July 26, 2011 thread titled "follow up," Hauser thanks Epstein for thinking about how to help, and Epstein replies that Hauser's "better place and future" lies with "all the money now wasted on charter schoo[ls]." Hauser then asks whether he can "count on you for the seed" and exchanges a phone number for a call at 8.
- •Hauser sent Epstein a series of project pitches. In December 2011 these included "science education gold" and "AI for gaming," with attachments. Later emails mention a traveling VR system for fieldwork ("I think it could really revolutionize how we do this kind of work"). Others cover a neuroscience proposal with an "$80k" price tag, with Antonio Damasio offered as a contact, and a June 2012 email about "gaming folks" met through a VC.
- •Epstein's circle discussed Hauser's academic troubles. In August 2010, Lawrence Krauss wrote to Epstein, "I see Marc Hauser has had some problems." That same month, Epstein told John Brockman about a message titled "Re: Marc Hauser": "You and I can speak about it." Separate emails show an organizer noting that Hauser withdrew his talk and discussion participation from a Morality Conference, at his own request.
- •Lesley Groff arranged logistics between the two. In 2010 she suggested Epstein catch an early Delta flight to Boston to meet Hauser. In October 2011 she told Hauser that Epstein was making an impromptu late-night trip to Harvard.
- •Hauser appears in other records. Financial and investment records list "Dr. Marc Hauser" as item 11 in a file index next to the Kyle Godfrey, Marvin Minsky and David Grosof consulting agreements. A travel itinerary lists him as a contact, with a note that he may be in Portland, Maine. Epstein's 2014 contact lists place him with Larry Summers, Eric Lander, Seth Lloyd, Alan Dershowitz and Marvin Minsky.
- •The relationship continued after Hauser left Harvard. In June 2015 he emailed Epstein about "help/ideas for my work with at-risk kids." He also forwarded Epstein a news alert about Eliot Spitzer's comptroller run in 2013.
