Watch: Sultan Bin Sulayem in the Epstein files
1:14Narrated from the AI-generated summary of the documents. Numbers reflect the archive at generation time.
Sultan Bin Sulayem, the Emirati chairman of DP World, appears in the files as a long-running personal correspondent of Jeffrey Epstein. The records span about 2009 to 2018 and include roughly 460 emails with him in the From/To/Cc header, covering meetings, dinners, travel and favors.
Most of the 1,016 documents are emails, and 460 of them are direct exchanges between Bin Sulayem and Epstein or Epstein's assistant Lesley Groff. The emails are short and informal: arranging lunches and dinners (Paris, London, New York, Palm Beach), trips to St. Thomas, introductions, and forwarded news articles. Two financial records show a $6,200 payment from Epstein's Deutsche Bank checking account to Bin Sulayem on July 19, 2017. The same payment appears in a Deutsche Bank list of transactions. Many of the other documents are duplicate or repeated copies of the same email chains.
Key Highlights
- •About 460 emails have Bin Sulayem in the header. They show direct, informal contact with Epstein from at least 2009 through 2018, mostly arranging lunches, dinners and travel.
- •Lesley Groff, Epstein's assistant, wrote to him in 2011 and 2012 to schedule dinners and visits. One message says Epstein 'is very happy to have you' (May 2012). Another asks about food allergies ahead of a dinner.
- •Bin Sulayem told Epstein his travel plans, including visits to St. Thomas in June 2013 and June 2016. In 2016 he wrote that he was coming with his girlfriend, his cook and another person, and that they planned to cook a 20-hour dish.
- •Financial records show a $6,200 transfer from Epstein's Deutsche Bank checking account to 'Sultan Bin Sulayem' on July 19, 2017. The same payment is listed in a Deutsche Bank transaction summary. The documents do not say what the payment was for.
- •The emails include requests and favors: a June 2014 exchange about getting an appointment with a specialist at Bradley Hospital, a 2015 discussion about selling a car, and 2017 messages with a Dubai agent about a World Islands property.
- •A June 2012 exchange has Bin Sulayem forwarding a business contact's message (subject 'Gabon / Standard') to Epstein, who asked 'how well do you know him?'
- •In 2015 and 2018 Bin Sulayem sent Epstein political articles, including a Fareed Zakaria column on Trump and a piece on Steve Bannon. In May 2018 Epstein forwarded a message titled 'Sultan Bin Sulayem' to Steve Bannon with the note 'fyi'.
- •In October 2009 Epstein sent Bin Sulayem a news item about Sberbank taking over a Russian property group's biggest asset, with the comment 'just as we thought'.
