Internal DOJ email chain from October 2019 discussing how to respond to Guernsey's Auctioneers' unsolicited offer to handle the disposition of Jeffrey Epstein's property following his death.
This document captures an internal Department of Justice email exchange from October 9, 2019, approximately two months after Jeffrey Epstein's death in August 2019. Arlan Ettinger, President of Guernsey's Auctioneers & Brokers, sent a letter offering the auction house's services to handle the sale of Epstein's property. The correspondence was routed from the Office of the Deputy Attorney General (ODAG) through Nathaniel Gamble II to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York (USAO-SDNY) for handling. DOJ staff discussed the letter as somewhat opportunistic ('a little cheeky'), with one official noting they receive such solicitations when it appears a monitor may be appointed. The proposed response was a polite acknowledgment that the offer would be filed in case there was any future occasion to follow up.

I'll check with the team if they anticipate us ever having anything to do with Epstein's property but I think the response (which could come from me) will be something like, "Thank you for your letter, which has been forwarded to our Office for response. We will file it in the event we have any occasion to follow up on your offer of services." It seems to be an offer by Guernsey's Auctioneers & Brokers to be retained to handle the disposition of Epstein's property. I was assigned to respond to this. Please advise.
