Benoit has just been diagnosed for "for advanced terminal pancreatic cancer with a prognosis of 1-3 months". He's been sitting on his big memoir for two years which has been accepted and is publishable, but it's too long, and, in any event he won't let go. (He insists that his junior high school report cards be included, etc.) I am offering him the services of Sara Lippincott, science editor at New Yorker for 30 years, who does all my books, as well as dozens of clients. She gets up to 830K to take a manuscript all the way through editing and copy-editing to get it ready for the printer (this doing several jobs that the publishers has many people doing over months). She's free to start right away, if I can get Benoit to sign on. I believe I can get his publisher to front the money as an additional advance against royalties and/or against a flow-through of his foreign payments which I can forward to them. But if they won't go for it (they're already in for $500k and that was in a good economy) would you be interested. Since he will be receiving significant bucks on foreign publication, I could flow the money back to you as it comes in. Best, JB p.s. Heading to NY tomorrow. Will be in office Tuesday. = From: "Shubik, Martin" Subject: Benoit EFTA_R1_01489878 EFTA02423002
Dear friends Many of you are good friends and acquaintances of Benoit Mandelbrot. I talked with Benoit today , to find out with great dismay that he has been diagnosed for advanced terminal pancreatic cancer with a prognosis of 1-3 months. He is still very much Benoit and I suspect would be happy to hear from many of you. With best regards Martin EFTA_R1_01489879 EFTA02423003
