A presentation in two parts, the exhibitions of the Spiegelbilder (‘Mirror Paintings’) bring together a significant early series in Albert Oehlen’s oeuvre and will be the first dedicated to this singular body of work in the UK and US. The exhibitions coincide with a solo show of the artist’s work at the Serpentine Gallery, London, opening in October. Spanning eight years, from 1982 – 1990, this series straddles a decisive period for the artist, during which he moved from the crude figuration and “bad painting” of the late 1970s and early 80s, towards non-objective painting in the late 1980s. Through the Spiegelbilder, Oehlen cemented his reputation for subverting painting conventions. The first part of the Spiegelbilder exhibition will open at Galerie Max Hetzler’s London space on 27 September 2019, just ahead of London’s Frieze week. This will be followed by a second presentation of further paintings from the same series at Nahmad Contemporary in New York from 5 November. more information (http://www.nahmadcontemporary.com/exhibitions/upcoming) ** A R T F A I R S ------------------------------------------------------------ FRIEZE MASTERS Booth - G1 Regent’s Park, London Oct. 4-6, 2019 // Preview Oct. 2-3 FIAC Booth - C33 Grand-Palais, Paris Oct. 17-20, 2019 // Preview Oct.16-17 ** A R T I S T N E W S ------------------------------------------------------------ JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT Basquiat’s “Defacement” : The Untold Story Guggenheim Museum, New York Until Nov. 6, 2019 more information (https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/basquiats-defacement-the-untold-story) Basquiat | Works on Paper Château La Coste, Provence Until Oct. 13, 2019 more information (https://chateau-la-coste.com/jean-michel-basquiat-oeuvres-sur-papier/) HANS HARTUNG Hans Hartung | La fabrique du geste Museum of Modern Art, Paris Oct. 11, 2019 - March 1, 2020 more information (http://www.mam.paris.fr/en/expositions/exhibitions-hans-hartung) GEORGES MATHIEU Artistic License | Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection Guggenheim Museum, New York Until Jan.12, 2020 more information (https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/artistic-license-six-takes-on-the-guggenheim-collection) ALBERT OEHLEN Albert Oehlen Serpentine Galleries, London Oct. 2, 2019 – Jan. 12, 2020 more information (https://www.serpentinegalleries.org/exhibitions-events/albert-oehlen) ** R E C E N T P R E S S ------------------------------------------------------------ KURT SCHWITTERS | A SELECTION OF COLLAGES The best in the Art World, by Jonathan Goodman Whitehot Magazine Sept.7 2019 This outstanding show of Kurt Schwitters’ collages demonstrates the artist’s command of a methodology active in modernism more or less from the start... read here (https://whitehotmagazine.com/articles/selection-collages-at-nahmad-contemporary/4375) ** L A T E S T P U B L I C A T I O N ------------------------------------------------------------ JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT | XEROX Essays by Dieter Buchhart, Eric Robertson and Christopher D.
