The Masonite Series, which he began in 1936 in Barcelona, were one of the exceptional bodies of works created during this period. To his dealer Pierre Matisse, Miró described the series as “the culmination of diverse explorations.” Miró radically painted directly on masonite, a hard, composite material which was only recently invented in 1924 and intended for roofing, walls, and furniture. This series consists of only 27 works of uniform size and demonstrates Miró’s search for new artistic materials as well as a “brilliant flowering of a new stage,” as the artist himself pronounced. having begun the series just days before the outbreak of the Spanish civil war, Miró infused these works with emotional and physical turmoil through disjointed landscapes, radical dismantling of figuration, and reliance on rough texture and crude materiality. The Masonites capture a pivotal moment for the artist in that they were the last works that he made in Spain before he exiled to Paris. NAHMAD CONTEMPORARY & PERROTIN Booth - C15 G E O R G E S M A T H I E U Perrotin and Nahmad Contemporary are delighted to present a booth dedicated to lyrical abstraction’s founder Georges Mathieu. Considered one of the most influential postwar French artist, this presentation will bring together a selection of rare works from the 60’s/70’s and marks the return of the artist in the United Kingdom since his 1956 exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. This show follows a special presentation of his work at Art Basel last June which coincided with the announcement of the exclusive and worldwide representation of the Estate by both galleries. Perrotin in collaboration with Nahmad Contemporary will host two exhibitions of unseen works; in Hong Kong this November and Shanghai in March 2020. A monograph with exclusive archive material will be published on this occasion. more information (http://images.nahmadcontemporary.com/www_nahmadcontemporary_com/GEORGES_MATHIEU_FRIEZE_MASTERS.pdf) Grand-Palais, Paris Oct. 17-20, 2019 // Preview Oct.16-17 NAHMAD CONTEMPORARY Booth - C33 J E A N - M I C H E L B A S Q U I A T D A N I E L B U R E N J E A N D U B U F F E T M A X E R N S T L U C I O F O N T A N A W A D E G U Y T O N H A N S H A R T U N G J O A N M I R Ó A L B E R T O E H L E N P A B L O P I C A S S O S I G M A R P O L K E A N T O N I T À P I E S C Y T W O M B L Y ** C U R R E N T E X H I B I T I O N ------------------------------------------------------------ HARD FEELINGS NAHMAD CONTEMPORARY | NEW YORK Until Oct. 26, 2019 F E L I X G O N Z A L E Z – T O R R E S W A D E G U Y T O N D A V I D H A M M O N S D O N A L D J U D D B A R B A R A K R U G E R C A D Y N O L A N D S T E V E N P A R R I N O R I C H A R D P R I N C E C I N D Y S H E R M A N S T U R T E V A N T A N D Y W A R H O L C H R I S T O P H E R W O O L ** U P C O M I N G ------------------------------------------------------------ ALBERT OEHLEN | SPIEGELBILDER NAHMAD CONTEMPORARY Nov. 5 - Dec. 21, 2019 Albert Oehlen: Spiegelbilder (Mirror Paintings) is a presentation in two parts. Currently on view at Galerie Max Hetzler in London, this exhibition will be followed by a presentation of further paintings from the same series at Nahmad Contemporary in New York from November 5 to December 21. The exhibitions bring together a significant early series in Albert Oehlen’s oeuvre and is the first dedicated to this singular body of work in the UK and US. Spanning eight years, from 1982 – 1990, this series straddles a decisive period for the artist, during which he moved from the crude figuration and “bad painting” of the late 1970s and early 80s, towards non-objective painting in the late 1980s. Through the Spiegelbilder, Oehlen cemented his reputation for subverting painting conventions. more information (http://www.nahmadcontemporary.com/exhibitions/upcoming) ** A R T I S T N E W S ------------------------------------------------------------ J E A N - M I C H E L B A S Q U I A T Basquiat’s “Defacement” : The Untold Story Guggenheim Museum, New York Until Nov. 6, 2019 more information (https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/basquiats-defacement-the-untold-story) Basquiat | Works on Paper Château La Coste, Provence Until Oct. 13, 2019 more information (https://chateau-la-coste.com/jean-michel-basquiat-oeuvres-sur-papier/) H A N S H A R T U N G Hans Hartung | La fabrique du geste Museum of Modern Art, Paris Oct. 11, 2019 - March 1, 2020 more information (http://www.mam.paris.fr/en/expositions/exhibitions-hans-hartung) G E O R G E S M A T H I E U Artistic License | Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection Guggenheim Museum, New York Until Jan.12, 2020 more information (https://www.guggenheim.org/exhibition/artistic-license-six-takes-on-the-guggenheim-collection) J O A N M I R Ó Joan Miró.
