July 2014 Stanford Online Courses
[1]Stanford Online Learning Opportunities! NEW STANFORD ONLINE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES! [2] [3]BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT [4][5]Scaling Up Your Venture Without Screwing Up Starts September 8 The success of every venture depends on scaling: on sustaining and enhancing its effectiveness as it adds more employees, customers, and locations. The problem, however, is that scaling comes with inherent risk. Even the best founders and teams face setbacks, make mistakes, and must muddle through stretches of confusion and uncertainty. In this course, you will learn the principles that will help you scale up your venture without screwing up. [6]>LEARN MORE [7][8]Technology Entrepreneurship I Started July 14 — Enrollment still open! This course introduces the fundamentals of technology entrepreneurship, pioneered in Silicon Valley. Course participants will learn the process that technology entrepreneurs use to start companies, which includes: finding a commercial opportunity for a technology idea, gathering talent and capital, selling and marketing the idea, and managing rapid growth. To gain practical experience alongside theory, course participants will form teams and work on startup projects. [9]>LEARN MORE [10]EDUCATION [11][12]Designing for Deeper Learning: How to Develop Performance Tasks for the Common Core Starts September 8 This nine-week course will focus on building educators’ capacity to use, develop, and implement curriculum-embedded performance assessments that fit local contexts. Course activities include evaluating sample performance tasks and developing and implementing a performance task that is aligned with a specific curricular unit and performance outcomes. We will use a learning-centered approach where assessments are not only about measuring learning, but are also events for learning. [13]>LEARN MORE [14][15]Open Knowledge: Changing the Global Course of Learning Starts September 2 Open source, open science, open data, open access, open education, open learning — this course provides an introduction to the important concept of openness from a variety of perspectives, including education, publishing, librarianship, economics, politics, and more, and asks participants to discover what it means to them. Open Knowledge is international and multi-institutional, and will challenge participants to take control of their own education. [16]>LEARN MORE [17]ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE [18][19]Computer Science 101 Started July 15 — Enrollment still open! This course teaches the essential ideas of Computer Science for a zero-prior-experience audience. The course uses small coding experiments in the browser to play with the nature of computers, and to understand their strengths and limitations. [20]>LEARN MORE [21]Game Theory Starts October 5 Game theory is the mathematical modeling of strategic interaction among rational (and irrational) agents. Beyond what we call "games" in common language, such as chess, poker, soccer, etc., it includes the modeling of conflict among nations, political campaigns, competition among firms, and trading behavior in markets such as the NYSE. How could you begin to model eBay, Google keyword auctions, and peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, without accounting for the incentives of the people using them? [22]>LEARN MORE [23][24]Introduction to Logic Starts September 29 In this course, you will learn how to formalize information and reason systematically to produce logical conclusions. We will also examine logic technology and its applications — in mathematics, science, engineering, business, law, and so forth. [25]>LEARN MORE [26][27]Language, Proof and Logic Starts September 2 In this course you will be introduced to the concepts and techniques used in logic. We will start right from the beginning, assuming no prior exposure to this or similar material, and progress through discussions of the proof and model theories of propositional and first-order logic.[28] >LEARN MORE [29][30]Social and Economic Networks: Models and Analysis Starts September 21 Learn how to model social and economic networks and their impact on human behavior. How do networks form, why do they exhibit certain patterns, and how does their structure impact diffusion, learning, and other behaviors? We will bring together models and techniques from economics, sociology, math, physics, statistics and computer science to answer these questions. [31]>LEARN MORE [32][33]Using GPS and Smart Phones to Create a Worldwide Laboratory and Learning Experience Starts October 13 This course will utilize smart phones to teach the basics of satellite navigation. A worldwide community of students will learn GPS while conducting "backyard" laboratory experiments on their own mobile devices. Students will witness how the satellite network functions and gain a truly global understanding of GPS. [34]>LEARN MORE [35]MEDICINE AND HEALTH [36][37]International Women's Health and Human Rights Started July 10 — Enrollment still open! This course provides an overview of women's health and human rights issues, beginning in infancy and childhood, then moving through adolescence, reproductive years and aging. The course covers "critical issues," such as: poverty; discrimination; unequal access to education, food, paid work and health care; forms of violence, in the home and in war and refugee circumstances; maternal health; and sex trafficking. [38]>LEARN MORE [39][40]Mobile Health without Borders Starts July 27 This course provides students the unique opportunity to form global, multi-disciplinary teams that create solutions to health problems around the world, and was the first course ever to address global health challenges by leveraging worldwide entrepreneurial spirit. Distinguished guest lecturers will present on their area of expertise, and students will apply concepts to highly relevant group exercises. [41]>LEARN MORE [42]NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCE [43][44]Macroeconomic Principles (Part II of Principles of Economics) Started July 21— Enrollment still open! This four-week course is the second stand-alone part of an eight-week introduction to the study of economics. Macroeconomic Principles covers concepts such as measuring Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment, inflation, interest rates and the foreign exchange rate. To benefit from this four-week course on Macroeconomics you do not have to view the earlier lessons.
