New Report: Type 2 Diabetes Nearly 40 percent of people in the United States are expected to develop type 2 diabetes in their lifetime.1 23andMe’s new Type 2 Diabetes report* explores the link between genetics and type 2 diabetes, and offers insights on how to reduce one’s chances of developing the disease. Developing the content for this report was a team effort. 23andMe scientists analyzed data from 2.5 million 23andMe customers who consented to participate in research to develop the model that assesses an individual’s genetic likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. About one in 250 people worldwide have FH, but the majority of people with the condition don’t know they have it.2 The report can be an important way for individuals to learn more about their risk for high LDL cholesterol levels related to FH and take steps to manage that risk. The answer may be partly in your DNA. A new study conducted by an international team of scientists, and incorporating data from 23andMe customers who consented to research, suggests that genetics may play a role in whether or not we engage in risky behavior such as smoking, drinking or even driving over the speed limit. It’s a whole new way to think about risk and our willingness to take it. The report does not account for lifestyle or family history and has not been reviewed by the US Food and Drug for additional important information. www.23andme.com/topics/health-predispositions/type-2-diabetes **The 23andMe PGS test health predisposition reports include both reports that meet US FDA requirements for genetic health risks and the 23andMe Type 2 Diabetes health predisposition report which is based on 23andMe research and has not been reviewed by the FDA. The test uses qualitative genotyping to detect select clinically relevant variants in the genomic DNA of adults from saliva for the purpose of reporting and interpreting genetic health risks. It is not intended to diagnose any disease. Your ethnicity may affect the relevance of each report and how your genetic health risk results are interpreted. Each genetic health risk report describes if a person has variants associated with a higher risk of developing a disease, but does not describe a person’s overall risk of developing the disease. The test is not intended to tell you anything about your current state of health, or to be used to make medical decisions, including whether or not you should take a medication, how much of a medication you should take, or determine any treatment. The Familial Hypercholesterolemia genetic health risk report is indicated for reporting of one variant in the APOB gene and 23 variants in the LDLR gene and describes if a person has variants associated with an increased risk of developing very high LDL cholesterol, which can lead to heart disease. The majority of the variants included in this report have been most studied in people of European and Lebanese descent, as well as in the Old Order Amish.
