The Week in Ideas: The debut of our Post Pundit 2020 Power Ranking
Plus: Patti Davis on B. Smith and Alzheimer's; a short documentary on couples separated by the travel ban. Opinions you may have missed. Good Sunday morning. I’m excited to introduce the debut edition of our Post Pundit 2020 Power Ranking , in which a panel of our columnists will track and rank the strongest challengers to President Trump. Karen Tumulty kicks us off with a punchy look at the field so far. (Special bonus: A wonderful logo drawn by our own Tom Toles.) Separately, George Will offers a profile of the Democrat he thinks might have the best chance in 2020. We published something else a bit unusual last week, and also wonderful: “My entire life has been put on hold .” It’s a short and very moving documentary, narrated by Jason Rezaian, about two couples whose lives have been upended by the Muslim travel ban. “Facebook has declared sovereignty.” So writes our tech columnist Molly Roberts in response to Facebook’s creation of something like a supreme court. It’s a fascinating look at how the giant technology companies are performing some of the functions of government — but maybe without the accountability. Fareed Zakaria, fresh from the World Economic Forum at Davos, notes the bleak view of modern life that has taken hold — and how at odds it is with the “astonishing progress” in the world in the past two decades. Finally, you may have followed the controversy involving B. Smith , the restaurateur and designer who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s — and whose husband has fallen in love with a woman who helps him care for Smith. Patti Davis, who watched Alzheimer’s take her father away in his last years, has a moving, inspiring lesson on how we should think about that story.
